that was just what I was looking for.

For anyone else trying this:  the syntax:

TD    {background : url(image.jpg) repeat-x;}

will display the same background in all table cells, repeated across the
cells.

To display different backgrounds in each cell, with repetition down the
cell, use:

TD    {background-repeat : repeat-y;}

and the normal, <TD background="image.jpg"> in the cells.
