Forum Software

I have a client that wants a discussion "Forum" set up as part of the site.
(Send messages, record/archive messages etc).

She'd like me to look at a number of packages and make a recommendation.
I'm not knowledgable on this subject, and simple searches for such packages
are not yeilding productive results.

Can anyone recommend a specific package, or shareware, where I might get
started. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
