First, I use ZA and haven't had any problems with it at all.  It 
seems to do what I ask it to, though the way my system is set up, 
it doesn't have to do much.

Second, the best thing you can do to secure your system on a 
cable is to A) Disable file/printer sharing B) unbind all instances of 
TCP/IP in your network properties from the Client for Microsoft 
Networking and C) set your primary network logon to Windows 
Logon.  With this done, there are no services from your computer 
available to a potential intruder, no matter how many open ports 
you have.
