Not really. They're all a trade off between throwing out 
mail you want and mail you don't want.

Best filering technique to catch spam is to first filter your 
mail to file desired discussion list mail into folders for 
each list, then filter out mail that doesn't have your 
address in the TO or CC fields. Most spam puts your 
address in the BCC field, not TO or CC.

You can also filter on common phrases found in subject 
lines - the original stereo type was "XXX" - but the 
spammers change those things all the time to get around 
spam filters.

I understand Spamcop is effective at helping reduce the 
spam your address gets by reporting it for you and 
many times getting the spammer's account cancelled.

I have a co-worker who filters out mail from domains 
such as China, Taiwan, etc - domains in which he has 
no correspondents, domains widely used for relaying 
spam.

But what I usually do is (1) forward all spam to the FTC's 
email address for reporting spam - uce(at)ftc.gov, it's 
easy to do if you set up an address book entry, the (2) 
delete it. Given the current US administration's efforts to 
go after porn sites and scammers, I think this is worth 
doing.
