workaround for widths

Hopefully someone here can help out with this.  I've been staring at 
it too long and just know I must be missing something obvious.

It concerns this url: 
http://www.hooloovoo.com/mark/gallery/covers.html

It's a thumbnail gallery page set up using the width designation in 
the stylesheet. Of course after I did this I realized that Netscape 
and Opera don't support width within a &lt;span&gt; tag in any 
useful form, so the page looks completely wretched in those 
browsers and only works "right" (or "the way I want it too" :) in IE. 
Is there a workaround for this, or something else I can try? 
Someone suggested I use it with the &lt;div&gt; tag, but that 
doesn't get me the multiple thumbnails in a row.

It's a design setup I use on almost every page, mainly with the 
photographers copyright info under each thumbnail, (see example 
at http://www.toddeldredge.net/gallery/2002.html) but I've always 
done it with tables.  Since I've just been learning more about 
stylesheets (with regard to spacing and layout) I wanted to 
eliminate the tables if I could

If anyone can suggest a way to actually get this to look like I want 
I'd appreciate it!
