If the PDF needs to be updated at all frequently, better 
to have the client generate the PDF file, and provide a 
way for them to login to their site and upload it when 
needed. You can teach them to make PDFs, set them 
up with software to do it, develop the webpage/form they 
would use to upload their updated PDF file - and charge 
them appropriately for those services. Or decide that 
creating and updating the PDF is something you will do - 
and charge appropriately.

BTW, I wouldn't consider someone a "friend" if they're 
telling one of your clients that you're not a "professional" 
because you don't have software to make PDFs.
