Actually, Dale, I mentioned it. <center> is valid code for 
the HTML 3.2 standard (or earlier, IIRC), but not for 
newer ones. It predates use of "align='center'", so I 
wouldn't describe it as 'bastardized'. Better to say it is 
the ancestor of the "center" attribute. IIRC, it actually 
dates back to HTML v1 or 2, something like that.
