I've used Digimarc. Their watermarks aren't very hard to 
remove.

I've wonder if you couldn't adapt the "image tracing" 
technology (used by many drawing programs to turn 
photos into vector graphics) to produce a unique 
signature identifying how the image looks (shapes, 
colors, composition, etc). Then if you think someone is 
violating your copyright, you could run a similar process 
on the suspected image and compare the results.

Don't know about that one, but I can't imagine how 
"password protecting" the image would help. I use 
several image editors that completely ignore any non-
graphic info in the file, and don't include it in the file 
when you do a Save As. And tying it to some 
proprietary viewer just guarantees that visitors won't be 
able to see your graphic (and in my case, would never 
come back to your page!).

Not very effectively AFAIK. As always, you have to 
decide whether the actual value of maintaining tight 
control over use of your images is worth the expense of 
such products (including the time needed to use them 
and the time needed to track and prosecute violations).
