Check out Knoppix - a Linux distro that runs off the CD 
and packs in all the bells and whistles, including WINE 
(for running Win32 apps), OpenOffice, Mozilla, etc. It 
doesn't touch your existing OS intsllation at all. You 
can download and burn your own copy for free. And I'm 
pretty sure that most PC hardware (even older stuff) is 
faster than the hardware underlying the Lindows PCs. ;-)
