Interesting original quesiton, as one man's "great design" is 
another's "woudln't touch it with a ten foot pole."  This is a perfect 
example; IMHO I didn't like wellvetted and surfstation (the only two I 
checked out on Andy's list.

My choice for good web design actually comes from antoher web 
design company - www.glassdog.com.  If you want to check their 
site, I suggest this specific page

design.shtml?design
which specifically addresses what makes a good web design 
product.  This is required reaading for everyone on this list IMHO.

(And if the design looks familiar, I liked glassdog's style so much, I 
used it as inspiration for my own company page.  All right, it 
probalby doesn't look familiar as you've probably never visited my 
compnay page.)
