Thanks to everyone who wrote with feedback on my question of left to right
scrolling.
My understanding from people's comments is that it if it is done right, it
can be tasteful. If it is done badly - well we dont want to think too much
about that! Keep lines of text short, make sure there is NO up down
scrolling, and of course provide the page in an alternate form for people
who use screen readers or text-only browsers, WebTV and for
printer-friendly too.
We think we might experiment with format like that on our "special
interest" type pages (as opposed to our main content pages) and see what
users think. At first I was strongly against this, but after hearing
everyone's comments, I think we can give it a shot and see if the
unfamiliarity of side scrolling is going cause users more headaches or
not. I also personally think we can do just as well with a vertical layout
(and I find it much easier to use). But cleverness is sometimes an asset
in our business, keeps people coming back...so perhaps in the future we
shall try it and see how it flies.
Thanks again for all your comments!
(and if you think I missed something feel free to send me a message, I am
happy to discuss this further)
-Michelle
