access to member pages only

Hi all,

I have a client who wants to have a "members" only section. He has a public 
area, and wants to provide a section where only paid members can access. I 
am not sure how to do this.

My idea was to prompt the member for a password (saved in a DB) to get into 
the first page, and save a cookie on his machine which will be checked by 
all subsequent pages in that section. My concern is if the member has 
cookies turned off.

Is this the way to do it, or are there other options?
