Downloading a File

Hi all;
How do I enable users to download a document? I'm using the code
<a href="ftp://www.thewebsons.com/SiliconHeartland/HyperWealth.pdf><img 
src="images/gimme.gif" border=0 alt="Give me the book!"></a>
and it ain't working. In fact, the image doesn't even appear! Can you tell 
me what I'm doing wrong? TIA,
