How Bizzare is this...

Some months ago my sites validated fine.  Now they are given the LOWEST 
rating - because I don't use CSS.  However, on browser compatibility I 
still get "5 stars".  So what it's telling me is "your code sucks big time 
(don't you love the technical jargon) but it looks really good on all the 
browsers".

Does anyone else see a problem with this?

To make matters worse, I've been reading up on XHTML and CSS and it seems 
that the biggest problem is that it's really difficult to get it all 
looking good on different browsers - what I'm doing now, in fact.

(excuse me a moment while I scream)

How do you reconcile this?
