Second most likely cause is it may as well be a virus/trojan that was 
planted on his computer by an email or download.
First most likely cause is it just crashing on him due to standard issues; 
some software he installed, MS doing what it knows best (i.e. asking for a 
full OS reinstall every 6 months),...

Hard to believe some cracker with the knowledge to go past system security 
measures would take any interest on your friend's computer. Have him update 
his virus definitions and run a scan.
