Peeking at the page's source code, I think I see what's going on - there's
a reference to an animated gif
http://www.google.com/images/hypnoads/dot5.gif set as the ad's background.
but when I try to see the image by itself, nothing happens and the message
"stopped" appears in my browser footer.
So now another neat trick to add to my list of things to figure out is how
to "stop" transmission of an image automatically...
