As I remember, some legacy browsers -- maybe Netscape? -- omit the cell
completely if the cell contains nothing at all, which results in cells to
the right shifting to the left.
Also, there is some CSS that does different things depending on whether the
cell is empty or not, e.g. see the property 'empty-cells' in the CSS2 spec.
