javascript selectively not working

okay, on the page

i have a little cliche generator.  you click on the button, and pieces of
cliches are randomly selected, and smushed together to form a new, silly
cliche.  but here's the deal:  it doesn't work in ie4.0, only on ie5.0.
i've tried moving the script into the page, so it's not in an external .js
file, but that didn't work.

and here's the really weird part:  if you view source and save the html file
and javascript file locally, it works in ie4.0.  it's just not working off
the server...

any ideas for why that might be happening?
