Let's also not forget that someone viewing a properly constructed site with
a high-resolution monitor can also resize their browser down to where the
line length is of comfortable viewing length. 

When I get to a site with my browser maxed up to 1600 x 1200 and the text
goes on forever (hey, that's MY site I'm talking about) I'll usually just
resize my browser.

A line length of 65 to 70 characters is considered the optimum length for
comfortable reading.
