I think that "Bottom line is that the Web isn't print. Deal." isn't talking
about pleasing all or any of the people any of the time. What it is saying
is that you CAN'T think like an old-school graphic designer who can specify
EVERYTHING on a printed page, right down to exact spacing, exact alignment,
perfect fonts and sizes, perfect colors, perfect leading, etc. etc. etc.
<soapbox>
You have to think like a "web designer". Your site WON'T look the same to
everyone who comes and visits, no matter what you do. Period. So don't spend
the greater part of your energy trying to make it exactly the same. You
can't.
Design for the web. Design for browsers that are maxed AND those that are in
windows. Design for 256 color displays AND for 16 million color displays.
Design for Mac AND PC AND Unix.
Design for people who will come to your site with Javascript and CSS turned
ON, but be prepared for those who come with everything turned OFF.
Design for people who can see AND for those who cannot. Design for people
who can hear AND for those who cannot. Design for people who use keyboards
AND mice AND other input devices.
And get ready, because by next year, you'll have to design for PDA's, cell
phones, and probably even refrigerators.

Personally, I think this entire discussion can be boiled down to the fact
that you can please all the people some of the time, and some people, all
the time, but you can't please everybody all the time. :)
Design for your target audience, which is what I believe Donna was saying in
the first place. :)
