This discussion goes 'round and 'round on this list. I think it basically
comes down to, what percentage of your potential audience are you willing to
exclude (or, at least, drive away) from your site? Many of the major web
sites continue to design to a 640 pixel (or less) width. If you are going to
design to any other resolution, just make sure you have a good reason for
doing so. Just make sure your reason is because you can't be bothered to
design your site smaller than it already is.

Most people I know now consider 800x600 to be the minority rather than the
majority - but most are techies rather than designers. What does surprise me
is how clunky 800x600 now looks.
