Talk to a copyright lawyer to confirm this, but I believe that copyright
remains with the creator (even in work for hire arrangements) unless the
contract SPECIFICALLY grants copyright to the company or person doing the
hiring.
So it's much more of a sticky wicket than you might think.
Where's Ivan Hoffman (an intellectual property lawyer)? I recommend posting
this on the hwg-business list. He usually (or used to) hang out there.
Does anyone remember Ivan's web page address? There are lots of pages on
copyright there too.

Well, if I produce a site for a client they have copyright of the site, not
me. Of course, I have reserved the right to reproduce all or any part of
the coding (but not the content). I seem to remember reading somewhere that
you can't copyright code anyway, since two people could reasonably be
expected to arrive at the same coding solution for a given problem (e.g.
scripting problem) given the same tools (even more true in this age of
wysiwyg programs).
