you are correct. it is the Gamma "factor." 

Macs are lighter, I have mine set to 1.8, I find that is a good all around
point for Web design work.

But yes, it is still a concern. macs are lighter by default than PCs. Even
with the new flat panel displays. (at least to the best of my knowledge)
