another problem is that computer science isnt science in pratice.

you can have two computers wit all of the same hardware and install
everything is the same order and from the very same disks and one
computer will still crash more than another.

a friend had a computer that kept crashing. it would just restart for no
reason. i swapped te DIMMS about and it doesnt do it anymore. i bought
some RAM and it had to have the sticks in a cirtain order otherwise my
system was unstable, and the same with a friends computer using the same
sticks of ram (different motherboard).

also, i had problems with a sound card in one of the PCI slots, swaped
it over with the network card, and no problems since.
at home, netscape4.72 is stable on my setup, on a friends its not, and
we both use the same OS.

First, I must strongly agree with Rebecca as far as being told what
browser to use.  I hate seeing those "best viewed with Internet
Explorer" statements on websites.  You might as well say "I'm a
lousy designer"   However, I wanted to share a different experience
when it comes to browsers.

I'm honestly not sure why it would make a difference from one
computer to another.  Maybe there are bugs in particular versions,
however, my experience is as follows:

I am using Windows98 here.  When I run IE, I have NO problems
whatsoever.  It is now my default browser (after MANY years of
using NN I finally succumbed and switched.).  When I want to take a
look at a site I'm building on NN for comparison, I find that NN
crashes an extraordinary amount of times.   My partner here is
still diehard Netscape user....I find it funny how he is
complaining (daily) about his crashing also.   I asked WHY does he
keep using it and he said because he can do this or that.  But I
can do the same things with IE and at least on my system, it is far
more reliable.

I'm running IE  5.00 and Netscape 4.6. My partner has Netscape 4.72

I would never get into an argument over which is better, and
certainly I AM a Microsoft fan, however, I daresay that just
because some people find that one browser works better for them
than another, does not mean that the other is inferior.   Let's
call it personal preference and move on.

hello -- i run LINUX here.  where failure is not an option.  it
gets
fixed.  unlike microsoft, where failure is not an option, it is
included
standard in all packages.
and as for your silly idea AGAINST coding properly -- if all you
care
about is content, hire someone with a little sense to convert your
text
to HTML.  i work cheap, i make it browser compatible.
linux is the future, not microsoft.  the number of people using
linux is
growing rapidly.
NN has given me some good habits i can now use when i work with CSS
or
even docbook work i am doing with docbook's SGML.
you want the program to be smart -- to just "know" what you want it
to
do.  i find that causes problems.  like ms word and the damn turn
it
into a list automatically bullshit.  i have to go turn everything
off if
i want to work in word.  i don't want the browser or program to
thnk for
me.  i still have a brain in my head. i want it to do what i tell
it to
do.
sorry if it turned into a flame, wasnt my intention.  im just tired
of
hearing how wonderful everyone thinks microsoft is.  i know it's a
piece
of trash that crashes all the time.
i know software can be different.  in the world of linux...
