i would say that while people are beginning to shift to larger resolutions,
the majority of web users are in the 800x600 range.  of course, if all your
web site's customers are techie-types who have the latest and greatest in
computing hardware, you can prolly get away with designing for larger
resolutions, but i'm guessing this is not the case.  a good way to find out
would be to track your site's traffic -- there are plenty of free sites out
there that will gather stats for you, including stats on screen resolution.

This discussion goes 'round and 'round on this list. I think it basically
comes down to, what percentage of your potential audience are you willing to
exclude (or, at least, drive away) from your site? Many of the major web
sites continue to design to a 640 pixel (or less) width. If you are going to
design to any other resolution, just make sure you have a good reason for
doing so. Just make sure your reason is because you can't be bothered to
design your site smaller than it already is.
