Thanks, everyone, for their suggestions.  I ran it by my boss, and he
mentioned his thought was to use Index Server.  So I will be researching
that!

If you have IIS as your server software you can use Index Server (part of 
IIS) as an intranet search engine. It indexes/searches HTML pages, MS Word 
and Excel documents, and with a free IFILTER (basically an extension for 
Index Server) from Adobe, PDF files. IFILTERS might also be available for 
other type of documents. We use it on our intranet.
