A thought...

flash in a layer
use flash movie layer with solid colour (black?) on it
fade in the coloured layer
this will seem to fade out the real page content
closing the movie will play the final animation: fade layer out again (and
seemingly content in)

On way to see if it's this what they do: use NS4.7 to check the page.  It
doesn't support transparency for a flash movie.
