Anti radio button (alternatives?)

I really have a problem with the appearance of radio buttons. Anyone know
of a way to substitute images for these and still maintain some
sanity? The submit is what I'm worried about.

Using JS I could switch the images and assign variables but how would I
have it post the variables?
