BBEdit!
Powerful text editor with HTML tools palette, syntax checking
(understands all the DTDs), syntax colouring, basic site management,
link checking, support for development tools such as MacPerl and Code
Warrior, and much more. The Mac version of DW4 has a demo version of
BBEdit integrated into it. There's a demo version available from
http://www.barebones.com but it doesn't have the HTML tools.
Great for writing scripts and programs and even the odd letter. Kicks
Dreamweaver and GoLive (which I use) into the weeds for producing
clean, valid X/HTML.
Plus those nice folks at Barebones are generous with upgrades and it
comes with an excellent manual. Did I mention the BBEdit user forums??

manual to identify all the parts, and no instructions on how to
operate the spaceship. - Richard Buckminster Fuller.
