I haven't written any java for a while, but I used to use the sun JDK and
notepad.  You must compile the code or it won't work, but you can write it
in any text editor capable of saving a text file.

I would write the code in Notepad and then use the JDK for compiling the
code.  There are other ways, such as Microsoft J++, (I actually hate the
product, but it is an option.  There are other java coder/compilers.

I'm teaching myself Java the "Visual Quickstart" way but I've come across a
small problem - what do I use to write my applets with?

In other words, do I HAVE to use a compiler or can I use Notepad and
Dreamweaver?  I visited the Sun Java pages and got a lot of definitions -
but no clarification.
