If you're on Unix or Linux, you can upload a .htaccess file in your root
directory.  Do a search on the web for htaccess and index or directory
list/listing.

On Windows NT, as far as I know you can only do it through the control
panel.  But on NT, I guess thay would have already done that because NT
admins generally are afraid of security related things.

Just a quick question;  When you have a directory that doesn't have an
index.html page, what do you do to stop people getting a look at the
contents of that directory when they type, "www.domain.com/directory/"?
