flash help -- can i stop a .swf movie?

hi,

i'm working on a site and the graphic designer wants the following
functionality:

- page loads with the flash movie looping infinitely
- when navigation button is clicked, the flash movie is hidden and other
stuff is shown in its place

the only way i've gotten this to work to the designer's satisfaction is to
have everything on the same page in <div> tags.  when a navigation button is
clicked, the flash movie is set to 'hidden' (or 'hide', depending on
browser).  my question is this:  if the .swf is hidden, isn't it still
running and taking up resources?  if so, is there a way to access that movie
and tell it to stop running or to unload itself or anything?

your help, as always, is appreciated.
