Is he using a COM serial mouse?  If so, try a PS/2 model...  might be a
conflict between ports.

This is kind-of off-topic but I don't know if it's down to some rogue
internet
software....

A friend connects to the PC via a standard modem and phone line (i.e. in
preference to any kind of broadband method). When he disconnects the image
of
the PCs cursor freezes although, invisibly, the pointer is still moving as
he
can highlight and click on items (when he works out where the pointer
actually
is).

Has anybody come across this ? I thought it might be due to something like
Comet
Cursor but that's apparantly not installed. Mmmm.
