Sorry to disappoint you, but the standard is not Quicktime, not Real, not
anything.  Why?  Each one has his limitations, and you see the active users
of plugins drop with the day.

I have personally opted for using avi's in the Indeo 5.x codec, which is one
of the most wide-spread for anything PC, and for the sound am using MS ADPC
(Which is sending difference between samples rather than the absolute
values, requiring less bits and thus less space, without really having a
compressed sound).

But on the part of reaching an as wide audience as possible, my
recommendation is MPEG-1, which, off course, is a bit old and outdated by
many other compression methods, but a player is available on almost any
platform supporting video playback.

Quicktime has the problem of

- plugin download
- audio compression codecs not always available on PC

Avi has the problem of

- not all codecs available on Mac

MPEG-2

- plugin download/buy
- size
- resource hungry

Real

- plugin download/buy
- quality

MPEG-4

- tough on processor
- today quality

Windows Media

- Mac?
- PC?
- Sometimes encoding errors


If you go for anything, check availability, check quality and make a weight.
I personally chose for Avi Intel Indeo 5.x because of the quality,
flexibility, encoding performance and availability.  Though I don't know
about Mac (if anyone wants to check - www.fiatcoupe.net - multimedia - video
- Belgian Meeting Exerpt would be doable regarding size).

For encoding, I mainly start from high quality material (shot on Hi8,
captured through Y/C of set-top player and MiroVIDEO DC30+ at 7MBytes/sec)
then encoded through Premiere 5.1c

Hello list,

Could you fill me in on what the "standard" for viewing videos online is.
Last time I looked into it mpeg3?? or something like that was the format
that would change the world of online movie viewing.  Right now I have a
bunch of video clips in various sizes for people to view.

The only way you can view them is with the Quicktime 4 plugin, which I have
provided a link to, but I'm wondering if there's a more widely accepted
format for viewing movies online and what that would be.  Also, how would I
produce movies in that format?  What program can make "real player" videos?
I'm on a mac so quicktime is a great choice for me, but I'm thinking that
windows users may not want to install the video player made by arch-nemisis,
apple, on their machine.  They'd rather use windows media player or
something.

Any suggestions/references are greatly appreciated,
