If your camera has a DV-in AND s-video or composite out, you can use the
camera for conversion: from PC to the camera, from the camera to your
analogue deck.

To capture analogue to digital, you'll need either a convertor or your
camera needs to support analogue-in and digital-out.  This means it would be
capable of routing some analogue video-in signal to the DV compressor chip
and then to the DV out.  I'll give you a small hint... Sony camera's can be
remapped to get the analogue video outputs to go to the enhanced signal
coming from the CCD, going to the compressor codec, virtually making the
analogue outputs and extra in-source, doing what you need.  But it's a
feature that requires that fancy messing-adapter thing for analysing and
other use.  It's undocumented for the consumer and voids your warranty.
It's also something you didn't hear from me.

I must say I personally use a DC30 card (analogue capturing) and for DV
tape, I use the s-video input.  I'm not recording back to DV-tape.

A solution for you might be a converter, or even a DV-deck that allows
analogue input etc...


Think the last solution is the way to go, but I'm not very sure the 500 will
get you there.  But it's something that will keep you from wearing out the
camera prematurely.

I had written to the group a few months ago concerned video capture (I
don't have the right type of card to convert analog to digital) and
debating whether to get a converter cable or purchase a digital
camcorder. The latter is probably the way to go, since I have a Gateway
and a cable might get quirky:-) I need some advice, though. I need:
   1)To be able to convert current analog tapes into digital for clips
in case the need arises (i.e. customer gives me a video and says "I want
it on my site")
  2) To be able to convert digital onto tape for personal use for my
family
  3) To do this without needing a rocket science degree!
  4) And, if at all humanly possible, to get one under $500.The more
under $500, the better, but of course, quality needs to be good. (I
don't ask much, do I?)
I run a platform of Windows ME and have a 1394 IEEEE PCI card. Does
anyone have any suggestions or preferences? You can e-mail me personally
