Coldfusion vs ...

A quick question to all of you.

We've just lost a job with a database management tool website to a
competitor.  We thought we had a nice and cheap solution (as in Chrysler
Stratus Cabrio cheap) but this other guy we don't know offered it for a
lower price using ColdFusion.

What I'm looking for is someone who can explain me the benefits of
ColdFusion over ASP or the likes.  I would say if you need a ColdFusion
server and expensive creation tools you'd go past the proce of ASP, since
I'm using just Notepad ad Editpad to create my apps.

So...
- what's cold fusion?
- how is working with it
- prices for development in relation to ASP (factors).
