I would check out the CSS Level 2 spec:
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/

Especially these sections:
Media Types
Box Model
Paged Media

Implementation of CSS2 in browsers is pretty sparse, but the sections
listed above may suggest an approach.
