Re: To Flash Or Not To Flash...by "Nigel Peck" <Nigel.Peck(at)itm-solutions.co.uk> |

Having just bought I copy of Flash MX (or rather the company has bought it) I thought I'd throw in my reaons for asking for it. I totally agree with the opinion that using Flash for content which is vital to a site, without providing alternative html formatted content is a very bad idea. Not only does it make the content unavailble to those who are unwilling or unable to install Flash for their visual browser, it also makes the content inaccessible to those who are using non-visual browsers such as speech synthesisers (and other disabled users assistive technologys), and also mobile devices such as phones and PDAs. I have seen mention that there is some accomodation in Flash MX for this but haven't had a chance to research it yet. However, I will be using Flash to create presentation and sales material which can then be used in three ways from one lot of work. It can be made available thorugh our web site, sent on CDs to customers as a .exe, and projected at presentations and seminars. The flexibility and power of Flash are my reasons for choosing it. It should be used, IMHO, only when it is the right tool for the job, and wowing people does not infringe on the usability and accessibility.
