file search software?

Anyone know of a program or utility for mac that makes it easy across a LAN
to make sure the
newest copy of a file is being used/copied? I know with mac I can use
Sherlock, but a coworker of mine is positive he's seen something  that will
do such a thing a bit easier than Sherlock. Plus we've also got PC's in our
network.

Just have  a hugh problem of people not saving files where they should!!
Then, when someone else comes along to work on a file, they're unaware they
don't have the latest version. And thus, someone has to go back and redo
work they've already done.
