tag to keep table dimentions?

I remember someone telling me about 
placing an asterisk with in a table tag to 
keep NN from making the table expand 
to accommodate larger text settings.

Was I dreaming, or is there such a trick.
The issue is a graph image for border that
pulls apart when text is enlarged.

OK in IE - funny in NN.
