Nope.

'Character entities' are covered by HTML. If it weren't then the 
slightly flawed version of the 3.2 DTD wouldn't complain about it.

For 'general purpose' indent it's fine. But depending on font size 
and coding diffences between browsers the space will vary slightly 
and not yield 'exact' placement.

Sure does. For older browsers that don't support it it appears as:

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Indented text here...

&#160; is reported by some to be more reliable/more widely supported.
