The 'current' version of Linux/Lynx supports both.
My intuitive guess (read 'WAG') is that 'numeric' character entities
will be in general more widely supported that 'text' entities. It's
just plain easier to code (read 'write a browser') for numbers long
before w3c or anyone else has decided on 'names'.
There's all sorts of weirdness out there. I've seen one browser,
think it was a Mosaic, the -required- 'comment closing' ( -->) or the
-entire- remainder of the page would not be displayed. Conversely saw
another (can't recall) that didn't support --> at all and just
displayed it as 'plain text'. Short answer: gofigger. [G]
