I've put together a few sites that use things like JavaScript mouseover and
multiple concurrent midi controls.  Neither of these work with IE3.  I use a
JavaScript redirect for browsers that can't use these functions, but I do
gently inform visitors about what they are missing.  I use the phrase
"Netscape 4 and Explorer 4 Enhanced" with linked Netscape and Explorer icons
integrated into the sentence.  On the non-enabled homepage I include the
additional phrase "Upgrade and Enjoy the Improvement in Performance."  The
customer is happy with that, I'm happy with it and it is not the least
coercive or condescending.  It is true, though, that no one upgrades to view
ONE site (not usually, anyway), but the cumulative effect of "Upgrade" type
messages (and the features, gimmicks, what-have-you that can't be seen or
heard) is to slowly push people to do so.
