Site Meter Tracker Question

For those of you using Site Meter . . . .

Two years ago I made a change in the way I'm using Site Meter on my web
site.  For the past two years, during what should be my busiest time, I'm
receiving a fraction of the hits as before.  Originally I had the tracker on
my main web page . . . but was unable to tell which of my other pages (lined
off main page) visitors were going to.  So, I added the tracking HTML to all
my pages.  Now I can see which pages they visit . . . but the hits are not
as high.  Did I shoot myself in the foot?  I'm using the freebie version.
