Table Backgrounds

Hi,
I tried to look this up in the archives, but the page seems to be down.

I am trying to code a table with backgrounds.  I need different images 
within each td tag.  The page works fine in both NN and IE, but won't 
validate.  I wondered if the DTD needed to be changed, and have tried both 
HTML 4.0 and HTML 4.01, but the validator still says background is not an 
element.  Is there a way to make it validate?
