Greeting's

The book i'm reading, Inside Adobe photoShop 3 (which is the version I
have), has an example of how to save a selection. The example uses a tiff
image of a multi-colored shoe box on a solid background. Using this image,
the book states these proceedures for saving a selection:

1. Press L for the Lasso tool.
2. Press and hold "alt" while clicking in a clockwise direction around the
box
This produces a "marquee" around the selected portion of the image.
3. Click on "Save to Selection" icon at the bottom left of the channels
pallete.
This (supposedly) creates a new "alpha channel" (labled #4 by default)
and displays
a thumbnail image icon on the list of channels.

At this point the book say's...

"You can edit inside the selection marquee but the areas outside the
selection marquee are protected from editing. Because the selection area
will disappear if you click any where on the image, now is a good time to
save your selection as an alpha channel..."

Here's where things get hairy....

In the book, the thumbnail image icon is BLACK (in the shape of the selected
image),
and the surrounding area is WHITE. However my image is WHITE (in the shape
of the selected image), and the surrounding area is BLACK!

What is wrong with this picture!?!

Thank You
Preston Davis
