Photoshop .psd format darker?

This seems ridiculous, but I am having trouble with Photoshop graphics,
once exported to gif89, being darker when viewed in a browser (or anything
other than Photoshop itself).  This makes for a "guess" approach when doing
graphics.  I wish I could be more specific as to what hues, etc., are less
intense, but it's just plain old darker.  Has anyone else had this problem?
