Rick, and others facing a similar problem:
I have a program (freeware, Windows only but unsure) I grabbed from
NoNags (http://www.nonags.com), but have not used yet. It's called,
"Picture Dicer 0.36" which does just what you are looking for. However,
since I have only discovered it myself, I can't speak for it, and suggest
you try it with caution, though I have been satisfied with most
everything I've decided to download from NoNags.
The readme information reads thusly:
"Picture Dicer is a Freeware tool that chops any image file into
several
smaller images, suitable for creating mouseover effects and
pseudo-imagemaps on Web pages. It also generates the HTML for a table
to
contain the partial images and display them so they appear as the
original image."
"Dicer accepts and outputs the following file formats: .BMP, .DIB,
.GIF,
.JPG, .PCX, .TGA and .TIF. "
"NOTE 1: If you start with an existing .JPG, there will be some
degradation
of image quality in the resulting output. This is unavoidable, so it's
recommended that you never start from a .JPG, but save the output of
your picture editor in .BMP, .TGA or .TIF format. "
"NOTE 2: If you attempt to output .GIF files from an image with a
256-color palette, the program will appear to hang. However, it will
still respond to Menu clicks. Palette reduction is not supported in the
Freeware version."
For those without Web capability, the file is 437KB zipped, and I'd be
willing to send it as an attached file for the asking.

*I want to design a pretty complicated "title" section, which I want to
*break up AFTER the design for various reasons. In other words, I want
to
*take one big graphic and break it into several smaller ones, all of
which
*will fit snug again in a table. One example comes to mind, if I'm not
*explaining myself well, at http://www.kfi640.com
