2D image navigator ??

I think I'm looking for a  JAVA applet .... free, share or $$ .... that
will allow a web browser to zoom in and out, and change the area of
attention, on a standard .jpeg image

I'm aware of 3D capable facilities, such as offered by ipix
(http://www.ipix.com/),
but I don't want the 3D aspect.

Can someone point me in the proper direction?
