idiot's guide to non-root Perl module installation?

I wonder if anyone knows of a sort of Idiot's Guide to
Non-Root Perl Module Installation, e.g., something
that tells you what really goes on when you 'make'
this and that, and what various errors and warnings
mean.

I just tried to install MailTools-1.13 and got a lot
of stuff about this thisfile being a different version
of that thisfile how and I might want to rm
/their/perl/library/thisfile, which I can't since I'm
not root (and wouldn't, since I don't really know what
I'm doing).

But all my tests as in 'make test' reported OK. So...
if it works it works, and don't worry about it?

I'm certain there must be other similarly situated
people out there who've been through this -- did
CGI/Perl & wanted to install modules on a web hosting
service where they didn't have root access.
